The Palazzolo Convent and the Hermitage of Sant’Angelo in Lacu on Lake Albano

Palazzolo and Sant’Angelo in Lacu are an extremely fascinating combination of destinations of Lake Albano and Castel Gandolfo.

The Convent of Palazzolo, the short name of the Convent of Santa Maria ad Nives di Palazzolo, is located in the Castelli Romani, near Rocca di Papa and Albano Laziale.

This historic structure is situated on a promontory overlooking the wild and unspoilt area of the lake, offering breathtaking views. Its strategic position places it not far from important locations, such as Castel Gandolfo and Nemi, famous for their lakes and architectural wonders.

The surrounding area is characterised by rich biodiversity and lush forests, perfect for walking and hiking. The route to the Convent crosses historical paths that connect the hermitages of the area, including the remains of the ancient Romitorio di Sant’Angelo in Lacu, a place of spirituality and mystery.

Palazzolo and Sant’Angelo in Lacu, although having distinct histories and characteristics, represent an integral part of the cultural and religious heritage of these lands.

The Palazzolo Convent: history and art between religion and nobility

The Palazzolo Convent has its roots in the 11th century, as a simple hermitage belonging to the Cluniac order. It was so significant at the time that it merited a major renovation in the 13th century.

This complex underwent a series of historical metamorphoses that contributed to its current architecture, a mixture of Gothic and Baroque styles. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, the convent experienced a period of splendour, enriching itself with art and structures, such as the ‘Villa del Cardinale’ commissioned by Girolamo Colonna.

The convent church, with a Cistercian portico and an imposing façade, houses ornate naves and altars dedicated to saints, including St. James of the Marches. The cross-vaulted interior enhances the spiritual atmosphere of the place, where students find tranquillity for their education and meditation.

Despite the devastation of the Napoleonic occupation, which led to the pillage of the furnishings, the convent withstood the erosion of time and today is home to a religious college.

The Hermitage of Sant’Angelo in Lacu: a place of mystery

Not far from the Palazzolo Convent, surrounded by lush vegetation, stand the ruins of the Romitorio of Sant’Angelo in Lacu, a fascinating place steeped in history. The first documented traces date back to 1116, when it is mentioned in a papal bull.

Its restoration in the 13th century by Cardinal Savelli made it the scene of a monastic life that continued until the 17th century.

The complex consists of artificial cavities, a 13th-century chapel and ruins of ancient monastic buildings. History tells us that the fruits grown in the hermitage were used for the papal table, highlighting the economic and agricultural importance of this place.

However, neglect led to its ruin; in 1773, by order of Cardinal Colonna, the site was destroyed to prevent its use by brigands.

Today, the Hermitage remains shrouded in an aura of mystery, immersed in a landscape of extraordinary beauty that invites contemplation and reflection. It suggests to visitors the importance of preserving these historical vestiges for future generations.
